Midnight at Inishmurray

I was very lucky recently because I got to do two things which I've had on my list for years - kayak out to Inishmurray Island and to spend the night camping there.  I also managed to pack my camera gear and tripod for the 7km trip.

The island really is a magical place with layer upon layer of history.  I was hoping for a shot taken looking back from the island towards the mainland and Benbulben.  However, when the light was decent at late evening, the mountain was in a dark shadow cast by a low cloud.  I settled back to a lovely evening with other members of the North West Sea Kayaking Association, with whom I went out to the island with.

It was a really clear night and I decided to head back over to the cashel at around 11pm.   It had been a very dark night but as I got to the fort, a huge blood red moon began to rise (just to the left of the mountain in the photograph).

Night photography can be quite tricky and I'm not the most technical of photographers 😃.   I could barely see the beehive huts and the camera would not focus automatically, so I had to shine a head torch on the hut and try and guess a focus point.  It took a 30 second exposure to allow enough light to capture the details of the cashel and foreground. Lots of filters had to be used to stop the sky being overexposed for that length of exposure.

So after about 2 hours of moving about to try different angles and playing about with different combinations of settings, I packed up well after midnight and headed for my tent. I was hopeful that one of the shots would work out ok and wouldn't be too noisy. It was only when I got back home the next day and uploaded the images to my laptop that I realised that one of the shots included a small shooting star, which for me makes the shot, especially at such a magical location.
